Each fall, a dedicated group of Penn State PRSSA students travels to New York City to connect with industry professionals, gain insights through exclusive company tours, and prepare for their careers.
The trip marked my third year in attendance, and I was especially excited to be visiting two communications industry leaders, Paramount/CBS Sports and Weber Shandwick. With my graduation quickly approaching it was the perfect opportunity to speak with and see firsthand companies that I hope to work for in the future.
Paramount/CBS Sports
After being dropped off in Bryant Park PRSSA had free time to explore the heart of the Big Apple, Times Square. Our group headed up to the 46th Floor of the infamous Paramount Building to visit the home of Paramount/CBS Sports.
Paramount/CBS Sports planned an interactive schedule of events for us designed to introduce students to their company culture, explore career opportunities and meet young professionals.
Five company executives participated in a panel to answer questions regarding their career development and advice for navigating the post-grad life. A luncheon was held after the panel for us to practice networking skills with our peers and other young professionals at the company.
Weber Shandwick
With our Paramount/CBS Sports merch goodie bags in hand, our group headed uptown to our next destination: Weber Shandwick. The renowned global marketing communications firm, headquartered in New York City, marked our second stop in their day.
At Weber Shandwick, we were welcomed by the Talent Acquisition Manager, who led a walk-through tour of the company’s four-story office space. We then spoke with two Penn State alumni that highlighted the incredible work-culture, innovative strategies and impactful work that the company does.
An in-depth presentation showed us how Weber Shandwick fits into its parent company, The Interpublic Group of Companies and the countless sectors available to work in.
Return Home
The rest of the trip included exploring the city and getting dinner with fellow PRSSA members while recounting the inspiring day we had completed. Conversations on the bus ride home were filled with industry facts, favorite parts of the day, and how we envisioned our future careers in New York City going.
When I returned back from the trip I compiled a "Day in my Life" vlog for the Bellisario College of Communications Instagram account to share the trip with other students. It was an honor to have people follow me along for the day while attending a trip for an organization that I am so passionate for.
